Decking for Sloping Gardens.

Sloping gardens can give rise to a lot of unusable space. This is where decking comes into its own.

Sloping gardens and decks were made for each other. Whereas most forms of levelling a slope on a garden involves a lot of serious money, a good solution to slopes on gardens can be found in the use of decking and decks.

Long term waste areas and waste of usable space can be overcome with the provision of a decking terrace - often creating a new lifestyle which had been hitherto impossible.

With a well constructed deck, there is no longer a problem of where to put the recliner, or how to stop little Johnny or Lucy  rolling away into oblivion. (Even more of a problem if the two said kids are not yours!)

It is not just a matter of throwing a bit of decking timber down on your sloping garden. The deck has to be designed and built properly.

One great advantage of decks on slopes in the garden, is the fact that the deck can normally get well ventilated underneath - quite important. Decks on slopes always look better if they are left open all round - rather than trying to box the deck in down the sides. This might even allow for a good play den area for the little ones - just a bit of thought as to how to waterproof the deck for those underneath!

Check List....

  • Plan the deck before hand, making sure that there is a good access route to it.

  • Make sure that the deck is well anchored down into the ground at the low and high ends.

  • Apply braces to the sub structure to avoid structural weakness.

  • Make sure that the high end, conforms to any local planning vagaries.

  • Read about Planning permission here.

  • Do not in any event think of building your deck if it is going to cause annoyance to your neighbour - at the high end.

  • Take a few levels to see just how high your deck will be at the high end. Often a surprise here!

  • Include for balustrades to stop any accidents with people falling off onto the sloping garden.

  • Maybe consider a two level deck, to even the slope out over a longer distance.

Enjoy your deck. Forget the sloping garden. As we said at the start, Sloping gardens and decks were made for each other!

A deck sorts out the problem of slopes in the garden. No expensive groundworks and levelling - just build a deck like this one.
